The Ruins at Sassafras
New Lebanon, New York
Nestled in the Hudson Valley between the Berkshire and Taconic Mountains, The Ruins at Sassafras is a former Shaker settlement where 67 Shakers lived and worked from 1790 to 1938. In February 2020, the property was purchased and the new owners spent 3 years excavating, renovating and restoring the grounds. Today this one-of-a-kind venue is a Shaker museum, events space and historic lodge.
While visiting wedding venues, we completely fell in love with this place. You can tour the last standing Shaker Chair Factory, explore the ruins of the Sister's Workshop, Cow Barn, and Hay Ramp, hike to the cemetery where 173 Shakers are buried, and enjoy the beauty of the gardens, waterfall, stream and pond. At one turn, you'll feel like you're in the English countryside, at another, the rustic hills of Tuscany, and then in an American pasture. There are so many places to enjoy and explore. We can’t wait to share it with you!
